You know Schlitz was the number one brewer in the US back in the 50s? I learned that in my wines and spirits class in college.
Anyway, I’ll have a pint of stout.

True story: every week after wines class, I had band rehearsal. One day, we had the rep from Banfi winery come and we tasted a slew of I talian wines. I love Italian wines in general. I didn’t double pour (that was grounds for expulsion), but neither did I turn down any samples. That afternoon, I had the easiest time I’ve ever had ripping through the Sousa marches were rehearsing. My embouchure was nice and relaxed, but I wasn’t buzzed. It was the perfect balance, entirely by accident.
Not recommending anything, just reminiscing.

A few years ago—well, more like 15 years ago—I went though a terrible bout of performance anxiety. I talked to my teacher about it, who made his way in the 40s and 50s in NYC. He was principal trumpet at the Met when he was 18, but left when the war came and decided not to go back to it, instead spending most of his career as the No. 1 call studio guy in NYC and playing in the NBC Symphony . Anyway, he told me about a famous cornet soloist named Del Staigers. “Now Del Staigers, he had problems with nerves. So he would drink a glass of red wine before every performance. Of course, Del became an alcoholic...”

I’ll take a mountain dew on the rocks.
Actually, scratch that. I'll have water. I'm slowly trying to cut back on the pop intake.
